The Smith Rafael Film Center welcomes French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet, returning to the Bay Area as part of the program On Set with French Cinema, bringing French filmmakers to US universities and cultural centers. Jeunet, who was the recipient of a tribute at the 2005 Mill Valley Film Festival, will present his personal print of Amélie (as well as his early short Foutaises) and engage in a discussion with the audience.

Since the release of his first feature Delicatessen (1991, co-directed with Marc Caro), Jean-Pierre Jeunet has established himself as one of the most versatile and imaginative filmmakers in the world. With the blockbuster success of Amélie in 2001, he affirmed his unique talent for combining visual splendor and emotional resonance. His other feature films are The City of Lost Children (1995, co-directed with Caro), Alien: Resurrection (1997) and A Very Long Engagement (2004). Currently, Jeunet is preparing his screen adaptation of Yann Martel’s novel Life of Pi.

Brimming with color, romance and great charm, Amélie stars Audrey Tautou as a young Parisian who overcomes a lonely childhood and grows up, in Roger Ebert’s words, “to bring cheer to the needful and joy to herself.” Jeunet uses narration to weave Amélie’s everyday adventures into a kind of modern fairy tale, and employs imaginative digital effects to bring magic to the streets of Montmartre.

Jeunet’s short film Foutaises (1989), also known as Things I Like, Things I Don’t Like, is an amusing catalogue of ideas that contributed to Amélie.

Special thanks to Florence Charmasson, executive producer of On Set with French Cinema, as well as Christophe Musitelli and the French Consulate General, San Francisco.

Presented in association with Unifrance, an organization dedicated to promoting French cinema worldwide.
