Children today live in a culture that is increasingly characterized by a "more is better" and "earlier is better" mindset, both in and out of school. This fast-paced existence for kids too often places them under undue pressure and stress. This can result in burnout, disengagement, unhealthy life patterns, or debilitating health problems. Further, over-scheduling infringes upon the most productive activity for children: unstructured play!

This evening is a must for parents seeking a healthy balance between achievement and personal fulfillment for their children. In this presentation you will learn about: the unique demands placed on children's time today; how today's high-pressure society can have unintentional but damaging effects on children; and simple ways your family can counter this fast-paced culture without sacrificing achievement while still allowing kids to be kids.

Denise is the author of "Doing School": How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students. She founded and now directs Challenge Sucess, a research and intervention effort to work with K-12 schools to counter the causes of academic stress. She also has been a lecturer at the Stanford University School of Education for the past 8 years.
