Following their sell-out debut at G Live last March, Vivace and the Brandenburg Sinfonia return with a programme of quintessentially English music. Hear Julian Lloyd Webber, widely regarded as one of the finest musicians of his generation, playing Elgar’s beautiful Cello Concerto; a contemplative piece imbued with sadness, his last great work. Julian’s Brit-award recording of this piece was chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine. Then listen to The Music Makers. In this retrospective of his works so far, Elgar referred to some of his most successful creations, with quotations from The Dream of Gerontius, Sea Pictures, the 1st and 2nd Symphonies, the Violin Concerto and “Nimrod” from the Enigma Variations. The concert opens with Vaughan Williams’ exquisite “Serenade to Music” setting words from Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice”.
