The Religious Right is winning the 21st-century culture wars, says Balmer. A voice of the evangelic Left, Balmer notes that 19th-century Christians rallied for causes such as abolition and women's rights, but says these values have been lost to an increasingly conservative doctrine. He calls for a return to a culture of progressive faith, and urges the separation of church and state.
