Artwork by Alan Bur Johnson

October 25 through November 22, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 25th from 7-10pm

“My work seeks to reacquaint the viewer with the body by addressing that which remains forgotten, feared, or otherwise unwitnessed.” — Alan Bur Johnson

A multidisciplinary artist, Alan Bur Johnson creates installations, photographic assemblages, prints and drawings, which communicate body empathy. His delicate work explores corporeal concerns regarding physicality, limitations, loss and desire. By incorporating transparencies, found materials and dissection pins, Johnson produces biologically referenced yet abstracted imagery which conveys an atmosphere of movement, examination and contemplation. The delicacy of his work reminds the viewer that all humans are susceptible and ethereal.

Currently based in Jerome, Arizona — a small post-industrial, former mining town, where his studio once functioned as a chemistry laboratory — Johnson received a B.F.A. in Printmaking from the University of Washington and was an active member of the Seattle art community. He helped establish the artist collective Studio 1216 and exhibited throughout the Northwest, including the Bellevue Art Museum and Pratt Fine Arts. His work achieved frequent critical acclaim with reviews in Reflex Magazine and Artweek, and can be found in permanent university collections in Seattle, WA; Irkutsk, Russia; Mexico City, Mexico; and Tashkent, Uzbekistan. His current work has been the focus of numerous publications, including an interview with the artist, which was featured on the Discovery Channel. Most recently, Johnson was awarded a Contemporary Forum Grant through the Phoenix Art Museum, where his work will be exhibited in May of 2009. January will mark his return to Seattle, for
an opening of new work at Catherine Person Gallery.
