Julie Beeler from Second Story Interactive Studios and Darrin Alfred from the Denver Art Museum (DAM) speak about the creative workings of the AIGA Design Archives.

Julie Beeler is co-founder of Second Story and her team of artists, designers, producers, and developers create innovative Web sites, interactive installations, and media environments for museums, cultural organizations, governments, and industry that inspire, educate, entertain, and enchant visitors through new forms of storytelling.

After years of co-productions with National Geographic, PBS, DreamWorks, and the Smithsonian Institution, Julie’s passion for combining compelling content with innovative interactivity has cultivated a unique area of specialization in an industry where Second Story has become internationally recognized as a leader. The studio’s storytelling and content-focused projects have been recognized in hundreds of books, magazines, and Web sites, and in almost every interactive design competition.

Darrin Alfred is the AIGA Associate Curator of Graphic Design at the Denver Art Museum (DAM). Previously, he served as Assistant Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). His role at DAM includes management of the AIGA Design Archives––a growing collection of communication design and the most comprehensive collection in the world of American graphic design from 1980 to the present.

To kick-off the evening, Julie and Darrin will discuss designing a digital archive in conjunction with preserving the archive’s objects and artifacts. Julie will give a behind the scenes sneak peak at the redesign of the AIGA Design Archives and talk about how AIGA members can be involved in contributing to the Design Archives.

Julie will talk about her studio’s focus on the fusion of interaction, electronic media, and the physical world. The evolution of interaction is expanding beyond the screen and as audiences continue to crave ever-greater control and personalization over the information, content, and experiences they have, the interface between the digital and physical worlds is blurring. Giving definition and new forms to this “blur” is one of the exciting frontiers of this young, ever-evolving industry.
