The only woman filmmaker to emerge from France?s historic nouvelle vague/new wave of the 1950s and 1960s, Varda?s poetic cinema focuses on the evolving role of women in contemporary society. All films in French with English subtitles. Screenings begin at 7 p.m.; $6 general, $5 members, visitors 60 and over, and students

Varda?s greatest commercial success follows the final weeks of a free-spirited, leather-jacket wearing, alienated teenager as she wanders the south of France in the cold autumn, interacting with individuals with whom she is often deeply at odds. 1985, 104 min.

Jacquot (Jacquot de Nantes) with special guest, Agn?s Varda*
Varda?s lovely and loving tribute to her late husband, director Jacques Démy, and to the magic of cinema, is a dramatic recreation of his boyhood in World War II Nantes during which he taught himself the tools of filmmaking. 1991, 118 min. color/b&w. Agn?s Varda will speak about this and other films as well as field questions from the audience.

Varda?s debut film interweaves two parallel stories: a married couple struggling to save their relationship, and fishermen combating poverty and officialdom. 1954, 89 min. Preceded by L?opera-Mouffe in which music links documentary scenes from the vegetable market on Paris?s Rue Mouffetarde. 1958, 17 min.

Happiness (Le Bonheur)
A controversial drama, photographed in Impressionist tones and set to Mozart, in which an idyllic, suburban family finds life impossible after the husband brings his mistress home. 1964, 82 min. Preceded by Les Dites Caríatides, Varda?s homage to the neo-classical female statues found throughout Paris. 1984, 12 min.
