See the US premiere of a Tibetan thangka-style painting exhibition and engage with Tibetan monks from India to explore sensory perception through Buddhist and scientific perspectives.

A collaboration between the Exploratorium, the Library of Tibetan Works & Archives (LTWA), the Sager Family Foundation's Science for Monks Program, and the Smithsonian Institution, The World of Your Senses draws on the traditions of 17th century Tibetan medical text paintings to interpret descriptions of the senses found in science textbooks today.

Nine visiting monks and nuns will speak directly about their experiences with the exhibition and the Science for Monks Program, as well as their role as science educators within their own monastic communities. In addition, master painter Jampa Choedak will share traditional thangka painting techniques while creating a modern portrait of the San Francisco Bay for the Exploratorium’s new Embarcadero location (2013).

The World of Your Senses will be on view at the Exploratorium from May 1–10, 2012.
