Let's talk about real revolution this Independence Day: Afro-Punk returns to BAM June 29—July 5, bringing film, music, and art united under the banner of black rebellion. The series kicks off with two nights in BAMcafé that feature the next generation of singers, songwriters, and multi-instrumentalists with something to say. Night one highlights the work of four distinct performers including The Negro Problem, an LA-based band (featuring the incomparable Stew) that performs "flamboyant pop so deliriously tuneful it could raise your cholesterol" (The Village Voice). Cutlery focuses on electronically-enhanced shoegazing, while Bear In Wolf's Fur pairs a DIY approach to music-making with a strong appreciation for raw noise. Spinning between sets, Taylor McFerrin builds songs from scratch with synths, samples, vocals, and beatboxing.
