African American Men's Health Forum April 24, 2010

The free Free African American Men's Health Forum is coming to Norfolk State University's new Student Union Building in Norfolk, VA on April 24, 2010. This forum, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will provide the first 600 African American men with free diabetes, oral cancer, hypertension, HIV, and prostate examinations. After the screenings, participants can listen to the leading health experts sharing the latest innovations concerning men's health. Lunch is also free!

The conference includes honorary chair, NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Smith of the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins, keynote speaker Judge Jerrauld Jones, Dr. Howard Duncan of NSU, Oncologist Mark Fleming, M.D., Gastroenterologist Bruce Waldholtz, M.D., and cancer survivor and President of the Hampton Roads Prostate Health Forum, Charlie Hill.

Why should you attend? African American men have the highest incidence of prostate cancer in the world. In the United States, African American men are at risk of dying from diseases such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes, stroke, suicide, and AIDS.

African American men, in particular, have a 20% higher incidence rate and a 40% higher death rate from all cancer combined than white men. The proportion of African Americans who are diagnosed with more advanced stages of cancer is higher than whites.
