Moderator: Dr. Joseph Chuman, Leader

Join publisher of Harper’s Magazine John R. MacArthur and journalist and author Thomas

Frank for a discussion of liberalism in America, and what progressives can expect now that

President Obama has been reelected for a second term. MacArthur and Frank will be joined by

moderator Dr. Joseph Chuman for a vitally important conversation about the state of our

democracy, and the obstructions that prevent any president from affecting truly progressive

change.
John R. MacArthur is the president and publisher of Harper’s Magazine, award-winning

journalist, and author of the acclaimed books The Selling of Free Trade: NAFTA,

Washington, and the Subversion of American Democracy, and Second Front: Censorship and

Propaganda in the Gulf War. In his new book The Outrageous Barriers to Democracy in

America, Mac Arthur argues that the American political system is rigged to keep the “mock”

in “democracy,” sparing neither side of the political spectrum in a devastating exposé of

the entrenched elites.

Thomas Frank is author of Pity the Billionaire, The Wrecking Crew, What’s the Matter with

Kansas?, and One Market Under God. A former opinion columnist for the Wall Street Journal,

Frank is founding editor of The Baffler and a monthly columnist for Harper’s.
