If you're within reach of Oxford, members and non-members alike are welcome at the November meeting of the ACCU Oxford local group this Wednesday evening.

Wednesday 26th, Seminar Room 2, West Oxford Community Centre. Don't go in the front door, but turn to the right-hand corner of the building.

We'll have two talks before retiring to the pub:

Phil Armstrong, Hindley Milner Datatypes and Haskell: Revisiting a previous presentation that suffered technical problems. Phil will describe the standard type inferencing algorithm by implementing it before your very eyes in Haskell. No Haskell experience necessary.

Jim Hague, How a Distributed Version Control System works - with Mercurial: I never had any trouble visualising how a centralised version control system like Subversion or CVS works. But when I first heard about distributed version control systems, I couldn't immediately see how they would work. This short talk gives a lightning overview of one popular DVCS, Mercurial and will attempt to describe how it works its distributed magic.

If you've not heard of ACCU before, you can find more at www.accu.org. In brief, as the website says, "ACCU is an organisation of programmers who care about professionalism in programming and are dedicated to raising the standard of programming."
