Acclaimed South African singer and “Lion King” Broadway actress Thuli Dumakude will perform BUYA AFRICA (“Come Back Africa”) to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Women’s Day in South Africa. This spirited and soul-stirring musical chronicles South Africa’s challenges for freedom and the political struggles in overcoming apartheid, as well as the fight against HIV/AIDS. This year’s Women’s Day marks fifty years since a 20,000-strong march to protest new laws requiring black women to carry passes in urban areas. The inspiring success stories of women and children will be featured throughout the musical.
Dumakude, who starred in the Broadway musical “Lion King,”, will perform with the Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago. For this performance, Muntu will feature traditional South African dance, including the Amanthini Can dance and the Gum Boot Dance, along with dance, song and folklore from their extensive repertoire.
The performance will benefit Shared Interest, a leading New York-based international microfinance organization that mobilizes resources for South Africa’s economically disenfranchised communities to build an equitable nation. Tickets for the performance are available for $30.00. To purchase tickets, call (646) 442-0186 or visit www.sharedinterest.org.
