Accent on Arrival: Language, Citizenship, and Immigrant Integration June 23, 2009

The Jackman Humanities Institute at the University of Toronto invites you to participate in three free afternoon discussions about language norms and identity in contemporary Canada. From June 22 to 24, educators and examiners, linguists and dictionary-makers will share their expertise and engage in debate with each other and the public:

* Does good communication always mean following the rules of language?
* Who gets to decide what is correct language in Canada? Educators? The government? The media? Employers?
* How is Canadian English changing in modern Canada?

There are three themed events:
* Canadian English: Beyond eh to zed (Monday June 22);
* Accent on Arrival: Language, Citizenship and Immigrant Integration (Tuesday June 23);
* Language and Media: From the Great White North to South Park (Wednesday June 24).

All of the events begin at 4:15pm and take place in the first floor conference room of the Jackman Humanities Building, 170 St George Street at Bloor.
