Renowned international legal expert Abraham Sofaer will discuss policy options that the U.S. can pursue with Iran and explain how the U.S. might successfully use negotiation to convince Iran to give up any intention to develop nuclear weapons. Sofaer posits that the U.S. should take action now, before Iran has shown both the abilities and the intention to develop nuclear weapons. He will argue that the U.S. should stop projecting weakness by indulging the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ illegal conduct, and start utilizing any opportunity that greater strength provides to negotiate with Iran professionally and consistently.

Sofaer is a George P. Shultz Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy and National Security Affairs at the Hoover Institution. He teaches a course on transnational law at Stanford Law School, and has authored several books. He served as a legal advisor to the U.S. Department of State from 1985 to 1990, during which he served as principal negotiator for several interstate issues that were successfully resolved. In 1989, he received the Distinguished Service Award, the highest state department award given to a non-civil servant. Prior to his time in the State Department, he served as a U.S. district judge in the Southern District of New York, where he handled several notable cases, including the libel suit against Time brought by Israeli general Ariel Sharon.
