Free “Senior Prom”, For Those 50 and Older, Comes to The Fillmore

What: Dance to the tunes of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s on Monday, October 24, from 6-11pm at “A Senior Moment, Dancing Down Memory Lane.” It all takes place at the Jazz Heritage Center/Yoshi’s, with dancing in the Koret Lobby; a live performance by The Silver Fox Blues Band next door at Yoshi’s; and an awards and reception at Lush Life Gallery. The event is free for people 50 and older, $20 for those under 50.
The awards presentation will celebrate the work of senior community leaders. Honorees include Ms. Betty Hammond from the Western Addition; Ms. Espanola Jackson and the late Ms. Eloise Westbrook, both from Bayview. They are being recognized for dedicating their time and talents to their communities. Performing at the ceremony is Lady Mem’fis and her band.

Who: “A Senior Moment” is sponsored by The Village Project & The Bayview Y, in collaboration with The Fillmore Center Plaza, The Jazz Heritage Center/Lush Life Gallery, Yoshi’s, The Western Addition Family Resource Center, Planet Fillmore, Gussie’s Chicken & Waffles, West Bay Conference Center, King/Garvey Housing Development, St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, Bumzy’s Cookies, Express Yourself Cafe and Renaissance Parents of Success. This community event is funded by a grant from the Dept. of Public Health.

Adrian Williams is Executive Director and founder of the Village Project, a service organization focusing on education and cultural enrichment for youth and their families in the Western Addition. The Village Project organizes/produces family events, including this year’s upcoming 6th annual Kwanzaa Celebration (Dec. 26 – Jan 1) and most recently, Mardi Gras San Francisco Style/ Fat Tuesday in the Fillmore held on March 8th , which drew over 1,000 people and Grilling in the MO’ on June 11th held at Hamilton Recreation Center.

The Bayview Hunters Point YMCA is an anchor organization working with key partners to bring quality services and programs to the diverse communities it serves. Always working to make a difference, its mission is to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities by enriching the lives of all people in mind, body and spirit. The Bayview facility has consistently served as a safe haven where people gather for community-wide meetings, events and celebrations. The Y’s practice of collaborating with other community organizations, schools, faith-based institutions, and neighborhood businesses has resulted in this partnership with the Village project of the Western Addition. The African American Holistic Wellness program, (a project implemented by the Bayview Y), and the Village Project have co-sponsor multiple events for children, seniors and the community at large in the Fillmore neighborhood, including the upcoming seven day Kwanzaa celebration.

NOTE: The Village Project’s free after school enrichment program is underway. The program site is located at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, 2097 Turk Street. Program hours are from 2 pm to 6 pm, Monday – Friday for youth 6 to 14 years old.
