John Mark McMillan played his first guitar chords on the loading docks behind his father's storefront church in the small town of Pineville, North Carolina. Though he admits that he began playing as a way to impress girls, the guitar would instead become a friend, an outlet and a way of sorting through the sorrows and joys of life.

·A preacher's kid from North Carolina, singer/songwriter John Mark McMillan is part storyteller, part poet.

·Drawing on the religious imagery of his upbringing, McMillan crafts spiritually-minded, emotionally-packed songs set against a background of indie rock with a decidedly Folk/Americana bent.

·His "whiskey soaked folk" style combined with psalm-like lyrics appeal to a variety of audiences, from the confines of a small music club to the expanse of a modern church.

McMillan says Economy was created after he and his band had experienced loss (the death of friends, divorce, miscarriages). "We're kind of crushed, but not destroyed... and there's a sort of beauty in that. There's a lot of hope and of looking forward. More so than on any of the other albums I've done. Not just a ‘you can live' but ‘you can thrive and we can do it together' message."

·McMillan previously released 3 independent albums before signing with Integrity Music/Red. His two major label releases include The Medicine and his latest, Economy.
