Mendelssohn composed this work as a teenager—under the spell of Shakespeare’s work—with themes in the overture representing characters in the play. The opening chords, which also bring the piece to a marvelous ending, represent the entrance of Oberon and Titania, while other themes embody the music of the spirits, elves, and fairies.
