Open to the public, in the Union Ballroom (map here).
Spend an evening with Juan Cole, a leading expert on Shi’ism and the modern Middle East. Cole’s lecture will be an extended analytical account placing the current political and military situation in the Middle East into context. The establishment of a sovereign Iraqi government hinges upon the security of Baghdad. For any lasting peace, coalition forces must have the cooperation of Iraq’s Shiites. What does the relationship between the United States and Iraq’s Shiites mean for the Middle East? Will this partnership foster peace or plunge Iraq into further internal strife?
Juan Cole is the author of the blog Informed Comment. Cole is also a professor of history at the University of Michigan and commentator on PBS’s News Hour with Jim Lehrer.
