From Sam Adams's first day as city commissioner three and a half years ago, he appeared to be running for mayor - as his ambitions seemed so much bigger than his job description. Shortly after Mayor Tom Potter chose not to run for a second term and Adams declared his candidacy for mayor, the "anybody-but-Sam" campaign began, with Sho Dozono emerging as the party's leading candidate.
Adams is spearheading initiatives ranging from new arts funding to rerouting Burnside as a one-way street. Dozono, a businessman and tireless civic do-gooder, wants better schools, more political participation and a stronger economy, but so far hasn't articulated his vision for the city's physical and artistic growth.
In other debates, topics such as art, design and urban planning might be lost amid other subjects, but at Bright Lights we'll spend the entire evening finding out what kind of civic, architectural and creative culture Adams and Dozono want to build.
The Bright Lights discussion series happens on the second Monday of every month.
