Arabs have been coming to the United States for over 100 years. The Greater Detroit area in Michigan is home to our nation's largest, most highly-concentrated population of Arab Americans, numbering nearly 250,000. Islam is now the fastest-growing religion in Michigan. Arab Detroiters are Christians and Muslims from many different countries in the Middle East. From large cities as well as small villages, they retain cultural ideas and practices that continue to enrich their lives in their new home. This makes them different from Arabs in the Middle East, while their origins in the Arab world set them apart from mainstream Americans. In this exhibition, cherished family photographs and the work of professional photographers offer a glimpse of a vibrant community that flourishes between two worlds.
