Pending government regulations regarding the manufacture, properties and commercialization of nanomaterials will be the topic of discussion during our weekly Nano Lunch on Thursday, July 3, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m in San Jose.

Topic: A California Regulatory Perspective on Nanomaterials

Guest speaker Dr. Jeff Wong, Deputy Director, Science, Pollution Prevention and Technology Development of the California EPA, is responsible for several essential programs within DTSC which have an impact throughout the nation. Dr. Wong's staff includes more than 150 scientists whose determinations affect how Californians handle individual substances, and sometimes impact entire industries. Before his appointment, Wong served as Chief of DTSC's Human and Ecological Risk Division since the early 1990s.

Dr. Wong has served on several National Academy of Sciences committees studying issues related to hazardous waste, other peer review teams examining U.S. Department of Energy's cleanup of the nuclear weapons complex, and US Environmental Protection Agency's programs on risk assessment. He was appointed by President Clinton as a member of the United States Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. Recently, Dr. Wong provided scientific support to California Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Winston Hickox for Governor Davis' Task Force on Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal, led by Dr. Richard Atkinson, President of the University of California.

An overview of the wide range of clean tech and nanotech training programs offered by the California Institute of Nanotechnology will also be presented (classes start June 2). Networking opportunities will take place before and after the presentation.

The event will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at the corporate offices of the International Association of Nanotechnology, 1290 Parkmoor Ave., San Jose, CA 95126.
