“on the rocks” follows the journey of four people who are all trying to answer the same question—why is the word “love,” which represents joy and happiness, sometimes more of a curse than a blessing? Mia (Rachel Kincaid) and Rene (Dina Laura), best friends and coworkers, meet in a café for a final farewell before Mia leaves for grad school the following morning. That same night, Greg (Sean Gallagher) and David (John Olson) are two strangers who accidentally meet at a bar and discover they have more in common than they think. As the night progresses, we see exactly how all four lives intersect and the conflict each character must face in order to move forward with his or her life. Laughter is the best medicine, and “on the rocks” reminds us that whether we are a rock musician, a lawyer or a Wall Street businesswoman, having a broken heart doesn’t make us broken – it just makes us human.

“on the rocks” was most recently performed in the Spring of 2008 at New York City’s Cherry Lane Studio Theatre as part of the Downtown Urban Theater Festival, sponsored in part by The Village Voice. The play went on to win an award for Best Audience and a cash prize of $1,000. Conceived in New York by friends and former Wall Street coworkers Dina Laura and Mina Radhakrishnan, “on the rocks” explores the humor of heartache and the universal quest for love and self-understanding. Broadway veteran Craig Ricks directs “on the rocks” in the 55-seat Studio250 Theater.
