"All the beauty of Astor Piazolla's music and the spirit of the Kronos Quartet." --CM

The Portland-based quintet 3 Leg Torso presents a very real difficulty for inveterate categorizers. The best one-sentence description comes courtesy of the All Music Guide: "Their original tunes incorporate elements of modern chamber music, Middle Eastern and Eastern European folk music and Argentinean tango." This unusual synthesis is delivered with equal parts creativity, intelligence, wit and joie de vivre. In other words, it's great, brainy, soulful fun.

From their 1996 start as a trio busking on Portland streets, 3 Leg Torso has advanced their career with a feature on NPR's "All Things Considered", appearances with symphony orchestras, independent film soundtrack work, two commissions for the Portland Institute For Contemporary Art, an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl and three CD releases.

Most of the original compositions are generated by charter members Bela Balogh (violin, trumpet) and Courtney Von Drehle (accordion). Their musical comrades are: Gary Irvine (percussion, mallets), Michael Papillo (bass) and Thomas Mackay (vibes, marimba, xylophone).
