Break of Reality is one of the only rock bands that does not feature a vocalist, guitarist, or bassist. Instead, the group includes three cellists and a percussionist who have developed a strong fan base because of an idiosyncratic sound that combines the energy of rock with the beauty of classical music. Formed by four students of the 2003 freshmen class at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, they played their first concert at the schools small classical venue and created a mission to compose instrumental music that challenges traditional expectations and unifies conflicting genres. Their first album Voiceless was created in 2004 and their universal sound has attracted a diverse range of listeners: opera buffs, hip-hop artists, metal heads, business professionals, and a loyal following of college students. The groups versatility has allowed them to perform at nearly every type of venue: rock clubs, music halls, public schools, colleges, and performing art centers. In June 2007, Break of Reality traveled to California for guest appearances at the 13th Annual New Directions Cello Festival. The groups latest album, The Sound Between, (re-released in 2006) has reached over 11,000 listeners around the world. Time Out New York boasts, Break of Reality puts the classical in classic rock, with is heavy, exotic original compositions and instrumental arrangements of hard-rock standards. If youre one of the many commuters whos seen this group in the Times Square subway station, you already know its secret weapon: It plays with genuine technique and solid intonation, but rocks out like it means it.
