4th Friday Art Exhibits and Opening Reception! July 22, 2011

On July 22nd, Art Works is presenting a complete turnaround in medium and texture going from the soft and colorful textile of Maximo Laura to a display of cold, hard metal art forms by Rainer Lagemann and AnaMarie Paredes. This 4th Friday opening and reception on July 22, 7-10 p.m. is free and open to the public and continues through August 21, 2011. Exhibits include:



EXPLORATION OF THE HUMEN BODY by Rainer Lagemann Lagemann takes metal squares and sculpts them together into graceful and seemingly delicate, yet strong human forms. Lagemann, born and educated in Germany, has lived and worked in South America, San Francisco and now resides in Miami Florida. He brings to Art Works Gallery an exquisite and moving show.


INSPIRED by AnaMarie ParedesParedes was initially attracted to sculpture welding after learning her great uncle, Jose Luis Moguer, was a note worthy sculpture artist in Seville, Spain. AnaMarie is from the McLean, Virginia area. She enjoys the challenge of taking a material that is typically thought of as commercial and industrial and turning it into something delicate, intricate and beautiful. Her love of modern architecture and design also greatly influence her work and drive her to develop the larger pieces for which she is best known.



MAKING FACES by Ben Yolton Yolton brings us paintings, sculptures, and a combination of the two. These abstract works all contain a face, sometimes obvious, sometimes not. Ben Yolton graduated in 2001 with an illustration degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. He works mainly with acrylic and various types of clay but also uses whatever is at hand. His work has been influences alternately by the cubist, surrealist, and impressionist movements, as well as a childhood misspent reading '70's science fiction novels. Ben lives and works in Richmond, VA.


UNSCENES by Chris Semtner Semtner is an internationally exhibited artist, author, and curator. He curated Poe: Man, Myth, or Monster, which The New York Times heralded as “provocative” and “a playful, robust exhibit.” His photography has appeared in The Washington Post, the London Daily Telegraph, and newspapers and magazines around the world. He has appeared a number of times on broadcast media in the United States, the UK, and New Zealand. He is regularly interviewed for a variety of print and broadcast media on subjects as diverse as visual art, literature, and the paranormal. He has served as author, co-author, or editor of seven books on Edgar Allan Poe. His paintings have entered public collections including those of the City of Baltimore and the University of Maryland. Semtner resides in Bon Air, Virginia and is the curator of the Poe Museum.


RIVER CITY REVIEW by Tim Wilson and David ParrishThese two photographers, both native Virginias bring a symposium of Richmond river scenes to Art Works.


JOHN PRICE RECENT WORKSPrice paints and draws realistic portrait originals including commissions, celebrities, civil war heroes, and self-portraits. His work is exhibited in Richmond’s Civil War museums. The exhibit will be in the Skylight Gallery.

JULY 2011 ALL MEDIA ART SHOWThis exhibit is a focal point of all Art Works’ openings. It is a juried show with cash prizes and is open to all artists and all mediums. The jurors are: Jennifer Glave Kocen, co-owner of Glave Kocen Gallery in Richmond, VA. and Joanna Gragnani, the assistant director. Call for Entries is on July 15th and 16th, 2011 at Art Works.
