4th Annual ASU Fashion Show April 13, 2010

San Diego State University’s Afrikan Student Union (ASU) puts on an annual fashion show, each year fashioning a compelling theme to fit the overall show.

This year, ASU’s theme for the 4th Annual Fashion Show on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 is “City Lights: Are you ready to be seen?” “We are using a lot of new talent this year,” says Charles Anderson, creative director of the ASU Fashion Show. “My expectations are getting higher and higher, and yet, people keep surpassing it.”

His direction has brought the fashion show to its current level. In 2007, Anderson encouraged ASU to hold the fashion show. Within a month, Anderson created a committee, gathered models, and secured a venue with only $20. Since the 2007 ASU Fashion Show, the event production has grown, and this year, more than 300 people are expected to attend the event at SDSU’s Montezuma Hall.

The 2010 ASU Fashion Show features designers from San Diego and Los Angeles, including CAN Clothing, Wealth & Power, and Raw Water. The designers range from aspiring levels to established professionals, each with a different style and theme. CAN Clothing, a San Diego-based company, offers church apparel, while Raw Water has a 1980’s urban vibe to its clothing selections. On the list of designers are two SDSU students, Jamilah Shabazz, representing clothes with an African theme, and Jeridel Banks whose designs incorporate Asian-inspired motifs.

Although the event is a fashion show, it does more than showcase fashionable clothing. It gives participating models an opportunity to shine for one night. The models in the show are made up of students, many from different backgrounds and modeling experience. Several students have worked the runway as aspiring models in the fashion industry while others walk to shed their shy shells.

The ASU Fashion Show is free to everyone, including community members and students from other schools. With its compelling theme, the event will open its doors to everyone on April 13, 2010. However, it is recommended not to be fashionably late—the show starts at 7:00pm.
