40 Years of Video Art in Germany - Exhibition. Five of Germany's most well-known museums - K21/Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dsseldorf (project carrier), ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (project organisation), Kunsthalle Bremen, Lenbachhaus Munich and Museum der Bildenden Knste Leibzig - compiled a studio edition featuring 59 individual art works offering an overview of historical and current tendencies in video art, including the early beginnings in film and television. They trace the development of the genre from monitor presentations in the 1960s to complex installations.

The video art includes works by Rebecca Horn, Valie Export, Nam June Paik, Joseph Beuys, Marina Abramovic/Ulay, Katharina Sieverding, Klaus vom Bruch, Dieter Kiessling, Ulrike Rosenbach and Ingo Guenther.

The project, which involved exhibitions, workshops, discussions, research and mediation in all five museums, was completed in May 2006. It has since been displayed internationally by the Goethe-Institut.

This initiative project by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation) documents the fact that one of the prominent genres of 20th century art is part of Germany's cultural heritage. Another basic idea behind this project is to preserve, rescue and disseminate this fugacious, short-lived medium.
