About Reverend Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani:
In 1963, Reverend Cecil Williams revolutionized the then conservative GLIDE Memorial United Methodist Church by encouraging policies and practices that focused on accepting people from all walks of life in order to create positive change in the community. For nearly 50 years, Williams and his wife Janice Mirikitani, the Founding President of GLIDE, have achieved worldwide recognition for their groundbreaking work toward empowering the city’s poor and marginalized communities to make meaningful changes in their lives and break the cycle of poverty and dependence. Mirikitani is San Francisco’s second Poet Laureate, appointed in 2000. She has authored four books of poetry and the editor of nine landmark anthologies, which provide platforms for writers of color, women, youth and children.
