Hilarious Film Offers a Realistic Slice of African American Life

By day, Russ Parr holds down a day job as a syndicated radio host, but when he’s not on the air, he’s an award-winning filmmaker. By stretching his talents behind the lens, his film, “35 & Ticking,” got noticed and made the list of “5 Black Films We Hope to See in Theatres in 2011” in an AOL BV on Movies article by film writer Wilson Morales. Plus, the movie has received a “seal of approval” from the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA).

Well, on May 20, Image Entertainment in conjunction with Swirl Films and Up To Parr Productions will release “35 & Ticking” in AMC theatres on Friday, May 20, 2011 in Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. It’s a romantic comedy which looks at a group of thirty-somethings trying to figure out life, love and marriage. “35 & Ticking” is part of the AMC Independent ™ program, which offers a diverse line-up of independent films that excite, encourage and engage.

“35 & Ticking” stars an all-star ensemble cast with Nicole Ari Parker, Tamala Jones, Kevin Hart, Keith Robinson, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Meagan Good, Mike Epps, Clifton Powell, Jill Marie Jones, Kym Whitley, Luenell, Dondre Whitfield and Aaron D. Spears. The film centers around the lives of Victoria, Zenobia , Clevon, and Phil -- all friends approaching the age of 35 and struggling to build the families they've always dreamed of. While Zenobia (Parker, “Soul Food,” “Brown Sugar”) is still looking for a man, Victoria (Jones, “Castle,” “One on One”) is married to a man who doesn't want children. Clevon (comic Hart, “Not Easily Broken,” “40 Year-Old Virgin”), meanwhile, is too geeky to get a woman, and Phil (Keith Robinson, “Dreamgirls”) is already married with children, but his wife is not very interested in being a mother. All four of them try to rectify their romantic lives and futures while their biological clocks tick away.

Unlike some black-themed films with over-the-top subject matter, “35 and Ticking” offers a realistic slice of African American life, dealing with love, marriage and friendships. “The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) is thrilled to lend our support to ‘35 & Ticking,’ Through our Seal of Approval program, we seek to support talented filmmakers and film marketers by providing them with a direct link to our devoted film followers,” said Gil Robertson IV, founder and president of AAFCA. The release of “35 & Ticking” is a part of a national movement of black-themed films released independently in theatres, attracting an audience and flourishing outside of the big studio system.
