The 33rd annual San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival opens its third weekend on Saturday, June 18th, and Sunday, June 19th, with participatory events celebrating the Rumsen Ohlone tribe plus dance set to the words of transcendent poets. Saturday features the "California Indian Big Time Gathering", a day honoring the Ohlone, with performances, rituals, ceremonies and craft presentations hosted by the Rumsen Ohlone Tribe at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Forum. Native American Tribal Song and Dance performances will be given by Elem Indian Colony Tribe, Pit River Maidu Tribe, Winnemum Wintu Tribe, Shingle Springs Miwok Tribe, Stewarts Point Kashaya Band of Pomo, and Manchester Pomo Tribe. The event is in partnership with the Ohlone Profiles Project, and the gardens programming is in association with the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. Concurrently, the Native Contemporary Arts Festival will take place in the Yerba Buena Gardens from noon until 3 pm. Admission for both events is free.

Also at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Forum, "Poetry in Motion", an afternoon of dance interspersed with readings by transcendent poets such as Rumi and Ikkyu, will take place on Sunday, June 19th, beginning at 1 pm. The participatory events features *Gamelan Sekar Jaya (Balinese) Jenny Fong (Chinese), Kiyonomoto Ryu USA (Japanese), and *Ballet Afsaneh (Iranian Classical).

Building on its past success as the most extensive and highly regarded festival of its kind, and responding to both dance community and public demand, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival is excited to offer new performances, events and venues for the 33rd season, scheduled in San Francisco and, for the first time, in Berkeley, from June 3-July 3, 2011.
