FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Transport Gallery presents 25.35, an exhibition of work from the Graduate Sculpture / Intermedia program at California State University, Long Beach.
Los Angeles, CA - The multi-media work of six artists from the Graduate Sculpture/Intermedia program at California State University opens with 25.35 on Saturday, August 20, 2005 at Transport Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. Kendell Carter, Jeffrey Foye, Liz Harvey, Jeffrey James Mohr, Jean Robison, and Jocelyn Schneider Foye will addresses a variety of contemporary themes while each showcasing their individual style. Curated by Erik Geschke, this exhibition will run through September 24 2005 with an opening reception on August 20, 2005 from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.
California State University, Long Beach has the largest campus within CSU system and was the first in the system to offer the terminal studio art degree, the Master of Fine Arts. Overall, it is the second largest university in the state of California. 25.35 is an exhibition of 6 of the school's graduate students - - Kendell Carter examines utility as a companion to social phenomena. His Work explores the juxtaposition between contemporary design and urban street culture and posits many questions along the way. Jeffrey Foye's work questions the gap between that which we value and that which we do not. Straddling studio and post studio production, objects, performance, and documentation are employed to play with conventions of form to create new layers of narrative. Liz Harvey uses familiar materials including bubble wrap, rain slickers, moving blankets, candy wrappers, and zippers to make sculptures, installations and performance installations that embody tension and paradox. Jeffery James Mohr creates objects, moments, and props that offer a vehicle for art to happen. His process-based work includes sculpture, performance, guerilla installation, and photography. The function of these processes is not unlike that of the camera lens, and through this ?lens?, Mohr reveals, illuminates, suggests, or denies social patterns. Jean Robison uses imagery to access a primary level of communication. Using both digital and traditional tools, Robison experiments with ordinary objects such as bedclothes, fruit, and pennies, often in conjunction with appropriated elements of popular culture. Jocelyn Schneider Foye utilizes the visceral responses of attraction and repulsion as the underlying impulses for her sculptural and installation pieces. The discursive space of the gallery becomes a laboratory for an abject exploration of the issues of disease and decay through medical and biological subject matter. Erik Geschke, the curator, is a visual artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. He has exhibited his work in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Seattle among others. Grants and awards have been received from the Jerome Foundation, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle Art Commission, and the College Art Association to name a few. He was recently a visiting artist at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China. He will have a solo show of his work this September at ZieherSmith in New York City
