DETAILS: 15 Februaries ago, two music fans joined forces to bring Mardi Gras to San Francisco. The first “San Francisco Mardi Gras Ball” was held at the Red Devil Lounge; booked by John Miles and DJ’d by Robbie Kowal (aka Motion Potion). The night was a huge success and the two decided to work together to bring more “good-time-music” to the Bay Area. Since then, Sunset Promotions has produced over 1000 concerts with the likes of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Carlos Santana as well as Sea of Dreams NYE, North Beach Jazz Fest, All Shook Down, Ghost Ship Halloween and the Silent Frisco series. Over the years Sunset has worked tirelessly on behalf of new and emerging artists helping them become the stars they are today. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Bassnectar, Janelle Monae, Rusko, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Blackalicious, Kinky, Rachid Taha, Ghostland Observatory, and Alice Russell are just a few of the hundreds of artists that Sunset has helped to reach new audiences. Whether it’s the merger between the live and electronic worlds, the revival of funk and disco, the emergence of bass music, Sunset is on point to make sure that the artists and audience are given the proper dosage of “Good Time Music”.

On Fat Tuesday, March 8, Sunset will celebrate it’s 15-year Anniversary with a reunion of old friends and the party that started it all. Classic carnival music from New Orleans and Brazil and colored throwbeads will fly through the rafters of Mezzanine as Extra Action Marching Band, the Brass Mafia and Boca do Rio hit the stage. Extra Action Marching Band is a local institution that couples massive streetband intensity with an outrageous and often raunchy stage show that could only come from San Francisco. The Brass Mafia is the “New Orleans wing” of the Jazz Mafia collective. Well-versed in New Orleans traditionals, the Brass Mafia takes them to new levels of musicianship with medleys that redefine the genre. Boca do Rio is San Francisco’s leading purveyor of soulful samba. Led by Kevin “GoGo” Welch, the group has been driving audiences into dancing fits for almost a decade and has played the SF Mardi Gras Ball many of those years.

The Ball is only a $10 cover this year ($15 at the door) to ensure that the community can easily afford to come together as one to celebrate with Sunset. Tickets are available at www.sunsettickets.com.
