On Tuesday, June 23, The Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence (CCME), the South Carolina Coalition for Older Adult Immunization, and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) are jointly sponsoring a workshop to promote awareness about reducing vaccine-preventable diseases. Mid-Carolina AHEC will provide CEUs for this workshop. CCME is pleased to offer this workshop as part of a statewide effort to increase immunization rates for older adults and to make a difference in the lives of the South Carolina adult population. According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2006 National Health Survey, only 43 percent of adults reported that they received a flu shot, and the numbers are much lower for other vaccinations. Our purpose is to educate health care workers, as well as community leaders, and raise awareness about the need for adult immunization.”
Research shows that consumers are likely to receive immunizations—which have proven to be safe, effective methods of reducing flu infection—when they are recommended by a health care professional. More than 36,000 Americans die each year from flu-related complications. Out of these, 90 percent of the deaths occur in people age 65 and older. We are encouraging health care providers and community leaders to attend this important, one-day event to learn more about adult immunizations. The free workshop will be held at the South Carolina Hospital Association in columbia, SC, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
