U.S. Paralympic Academy, RHI Sports Program to host 2009 Kids Discovery Sports Day Aug. 15; children with disabilities can learn about paralympic sports
Matt Scott, U.S. Paralympian and member of Men’s Wheelchair Basketball National Team, will be featured speaker
(Indianapolis, Ind.) – The U.S. Paralympic Academy and Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Sports Program (RHISP) today announced that the 2009 Kids Discovery Sports Day will be held Aug. 15 at Krannert Park in Indianapolis.
This annual event is aimed at kids who have physical disabilities, ages six to18, from Indianapolis and the surrounding area. It provides an opportunity for these children and teens to learn about and expand their skills in Paralympic sports such as wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, track and field, and quad rugby.
Special guest speaker for this year’s ‘Kids Day’ will be U.S. Paralympian Matt Scott. Scott, whose hometown is Detroit, Mich., has been a member of the U.S. Men’s Wheelchair Basketball National Team since 2004 and has competed in two Paralympic Games: 2004 in Athens and 2008 in Beijing. He also competed on the collegiate level at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from 2004 through 2007, and won three national championships during his time there. “This event is a chance for kids with disabilities to be exposed to all of the Paralympic sporting possibilities that are out there,” said RHISP Event Coordinator Jake Patrick. “And when you add the presence of an elite athlete like Matt Scott, the experience will be one they’ll never forget.”
