Chinese tennis players Li Ting and Sun Tiantian won the gold for Woman for Double which encouraged the Asian tennis players. It was the first time to catch eyes from the world for their excellent achievement.

At 12 years of age, Martina won her first junior Grand Slam event at the French Open during 1993. She made her debut on the WTA rankings at position 399 during March 1994, and broke into the top 20 on June 12, 1995, only 15 months later. History was made in England on Monday, July 8th, 1996 as Martina became the youngest person ever to win a Championship event at Wimbledon (the Ladies Doubles). Martina was just 3 days younger than Lottie Dod who won the Singles in 1887. Fantastic! Since this historic victory, everything went quickly; Martina played the semi final of the US Open against Steffi Graf and won her first WTA Tour event at Filderstadt. The 1997 year was the consecration for the young Swiss star; she won 3 of the 4 Grand Slam events (only loosing in the final of the French Open) and became the youngest-ever world number one (at 16 years and 182 days).
