We are delighted to invite you to the 1st Annual Network Meeting of COST-Action FA0906, UV4growth, taking place in Szeged, Hungary from 7-9 February 2011.

Significant new understanding of UV-B mediated processes in plants has been gained during the last decade. The aim of the COST-Action is to further improve our understanding of the fundamentals UV-B mediated effects on plant growth, food quality, and plant-environment interactions by integrating nationally and internationally funded research on molecular, physiological, metabolic and ecological processes.

In accordance with this aim, we have a programme of presentations by key European UV-researchers. Presentations will focus on four thematic areas:

  • UV-induced nuclear-based processes that control growth

  • UV-induced metabolic processes that determine quality of plant-based food and/or feed

  • UV-mediated organismal processes that determine stress tolerance and biomass accumulation, competitive interactions

  • Consequences of plant UV exposure across trophic levels

There will be also extensive opportunity for shorter research presentations by network members, old or young, experienced or inexperienced, that have an interest in the effects of UV-B radiation on plants. To be considered for an oral presentation, please submit an abstract with your registration.

We are pleased to announce that the MC of our Action has decided to make a contribution towards travel & accommodation costs available for some 50 selected contributors that have submitted an abstract for oral presentation. A rolling programme of abstract selection will proceed till all bursaries have been awarded. Young researchers (ESR) are especially invited to send in abstracts. The registration fee is kept at just €100.

Separate travel & accommodation funding is available for one MC member per country.

We are also pleased to announce that a UV-B Research Methodology Workshop (February 9, 2011) has been organised in conjunction with this Network meeting. The school is specifically aimed to improve understanding of the technologies to manipulate and measure UV-exposure levels. To be considered for participation in the Workshop, please register.

We hope to see you all in Szeged, and wish you an enjoyable network meeting in the inspiring, beautiful city of Szeged.
