About the conference

The UK and Ireland Chapter of IFESS was formed in 2009 to promote the research, application, and understanding of electrical stimulation.

Research into functional electrical stimulation has reached an exciting stage in its development. For example, our understanding of the way in which the central nervous system responds to peripheral stimulation has developed with new imaging and other technologies. There have also been significant technical advances in FES technologies for both clinical and sporting applications. In the clinical arena, the recent publication by NICE of guidelines supporting the use of FES for drop foot reflects the growing strength of the evidence base.

Who is the conference for?

This conference will provide an opportunity for researchers and other interested parties to meet and share the latest research on FES. The first day of the conference will have a clinical focus and we particularly encourage clinicians who use FES to attend.

Papers to be presented may include the latest work in the following areas:

* Upper and lower extremity FES
* Therapeutic electrical stimulation
* Neuromodulation
* Human-Computer-Interfaces
* FES for respiration/blood pressure control
* FES for bladder/bowel/sexual function
* Control strategies
* Physiological effects of electrical stimulation on muscle and nerve
* Sensory neuroprostheses (hearing, vision)
* FES Sports
* Clinical implementation of FES devices
* Stimulation of denevated muscle
* User involvement in FES research
