As a tribute to the times of The Hippodrome's origin, THE RVA BOOTLEGGERS BALL is a celebration of the "Prohibition" era...without the restrictions!
The Hippodrome opened in 1914 as a mixed-use vaudeville and movie theatre, located in the Jackson Ward district that attracted a mainly African-American audience. In the 1930's and 1940's it attracted big stars who appeared on the stage, such as Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, Ethel Waters, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Moms Mably, James Brown, Billy Holiday and Nat King Cole.
