Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP will celebrate the 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday with its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition.

Fourth and fifth grade students from 10 area schools will present five-minute speeches on the topic: “What opportunities will I have in my life because of Dr. King?” Students are judged on their presentation and memorization of the speech. The competition encourages young students to celebrate diversity, to promote awareness and understanding of different cultures, and to encourage the local community to pay tribute to Dr. King’s legacy.

Schools participating in this year’s competition are Atherton, Blackshear, Crespo, Dodson, Lockhart, Park Place, Peck, Pleasantville, Thompson and Whidby. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

The event kicks off at 9:45 with a performance by the Salvation Army Choir. The Gardere Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Final Competition will start at 10 and run until 11:45 a.m.
