The widespread net of commercialization and the rat-race that it leads to, are the two dangerous vices of the present society that play the main antagonists of this play. People lose their human values as they are bent on setting new track records in this rat-race. The importance of material wealth and aspirations supercede humanitarian ethics.

A young doctor Mriganka, the protagonist, inspite of his mundane job at a morgue and dealing with dead bodies, still retains certain aesthetic values (love for poetry) in his life. In his dream, he comes in contact with the ghost of Ashim, another young man, who has just lost his life while being enmeshed in the lust for money-making. Ashim passes over his insatiable greed to Mriganka, who finally loses his foothold and falls in the same quicksand. On awakening, realization dawns upon Mriganka that his nightmare was only a manifestation of his own suppressed desires and distress, and tries to re-compose himself.
The popular character from the comic strip, Chaloman Ashariri (Phantom) lends its name to this play. It is this elusive “Phantom” – the all pervading and insatiable lust for achieving the materialistic needs that the playwright has tried to highlight in this black comedy.
