Young Professionals of New York City (YPNYC) in coordination with NetAid, is hosting a special panel discussion on Jun 15th discussing the issues of global poverty and discuss how we can join the fight against global poverty in a meaningful and sustainable manner. Learn how you can take action - through voting, donating, getting in touch with political leaders, volunteering, teaching children, and spreading the word - to make a difference in the fight against extreme poverty.

PARTICIPANTS:

CAROL WELCH: US Campaign Coordinator, Millennium Development Goals Campaign Carol Welch coordinates efforts in the United States for the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Campaign. The campaign seeks to promote public understanding and awareness of the MDGs, and the role of citizens and governments in meeting these internationally agreed goals.

DAVID MORRISON: President, NetAid
David Morrison became president of NetAid in 2001. NetAid, a non-governmental organization based in New York, is dedicated to mobilizing people - particularly young people-in the U.S. and other wealthy countries to make ending extreme poverty a global priority. Under David's leadership, more than 80,000 people have participated in NetAid programs and campaigns - raising awareness about extreme poverty and taking direct action to help over 500,000 people in developing countries.

JOY PORTELLA: Director of Communications, NetAid
Joy is responsible for devising communications strategies, conducting outreach to print and broadcast media, preparing online and offline marketing materials, and liaising with NetAid's communications partner organizations. In this position, she conceptualized and implemented strategic communications campaigns for a diverse range of government agencies, academic institutions, nonprofits, philanthropies and corporate entities.

BACKGROUND:
Extreme poverty - living on less than $1 a day - is a stark reality for more than one in six people on the planet. This kind of poverty robs individuals of their fundamental human rights and is an obstacle to a just and peaceful world. For many Americans, including busy young professionals in New York City, this may seem like a faraway problem so huge in scope that it can't be solved. This is a misconception. The world has the resources and the know-how to end extreme poverty in a generation if poor and rich countries work together to do this. It's not just world leaders who will need to take action; everyday people can be part of the solution to global poverty.
