“Glory” (1989), starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman, is based on the letters of Colonel Robert G. Shaw, a 23-year-old officer who volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudice of both the enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks) and his own fellow officers.
