World Science Day Celebrations November 12, 2008

Gujarat Science City Celebrates World Science Day for Peace & Development. Theme - Investing in Science: Investing in the Future. The celebration has been designed as a series of activities for the students, teachers and the general public.

Science and Technology have a great contribution for the societal development. Advances in science and technology have always been closely linked to economic and social progress and prosperity. In turn, economic and social development leads to stability and peace. In this sense it can be said that S&T advances help to lay the groundwork both for development and for peace.

To address on the above and to raise public awareness on the issues, the UNESCO is celebrating the World Science Day for Peace and Development on 10th November 2008 world-wide with an aim to provide an opportunity for special attention to be paid to the contribution of science to achieving sustainable development and enhancing the prospects for peace. From agricultural production to medicine, from sustainable energy to water management, scientific and technological advances play a key role in social and economic development through a diverse range of applications.

Activities like illustrative poster exhibition on science and technology for sustainable development, painting, essay writing, quiz, puzzle and screening of scientific movies, etc for the children have been organized in the Science City to inspire wonder and stimulate creative exploration through fun interactive science. School children from Class I to Class XII may participate in the poster painting, essay writing and debate competitions for the students on the above themes. There will be no registration fee for participation. The meritorious students will receive prize and certificates at the concluding session.

Working under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat, the Gujarat Science City is organizing several scientific programmes and educational activities regularly that depict various scientific themes linked with the day-to-day life. These will help in bringing scientific temper, attitude and deploying science for awareness and empowerment of the community.

In addition, the school and college children along with the other public may explore the marvel of science, experience the large format science movies on IMAX 3D screen, Hall of Space, Hall of Science, Energy Education Park, Life Science Park, Children Activity Centre, motion simulator and spare the evening at the grand Musical Fountain as well as observe the night sky through telescopes inside the Science City campus.

The celebration of World Science Day serves to remind us what science is for, namely peace and development. This annual occasion is a regular opportunity to reflect on how science can best serve this purpose. We must all participate in forging a future of peace and sustainable development in which science plays its vital role. Let us invest in a new future based on shared advances and benefits of science.
