The Wakes, Selborne, Hampshire
Alton, England GU34 3JH

Takes place in the Field Studies Centre

Standing against the elements for over 100 years, the prefabricated, cork or seaweed insulated wooden huts which were occupied by Robert Scott and Ernest Shakelton during their expeditions to the South Pole, have been preserved by the freezing Antarctic conditions. Complete with stables for ponies, shelves stocked with tins of food, laundry hanging on the line and bread on the table, these hits are of enormous historic value.
Christopher Calan of the National Trust brings this fascinating subject to life and describes the conservation work that has begun, often in extreme conditions and 24 hour darkness.
