Ladies, single and at least 21 years old, test their mettle by hauling firewood, fetching water, shooting ptarmigan, opening beer cans, and performing other tasks vital to surviving married life on the frontier — according to the Talkeetna Bachelor Society, anyway, which hosts the event and highly recommends a sense of humor.

...The Annual Bachelor Society Benefit Auction and Bachelor Ball takes place in the evening after the Wilderness Woman Contest. Only single ladies over 21 and Society members are permitted to enter the auction room. The Bachelors spruce up and may even entertain in order to up the bidding. After all, it is for a good cause! The Wilderness Woman is then crowned. Following that, the auction begins in earnest. Winning bidders are entitled to a drink and a dance from their bachelor – anything else is strictly up to the parties involved. After the auction, the Bachelor Ball begins, and anyone old enough can participate up to the limit of the dance floor. Fortunately, other local establishments usually have live music and dancing for those who cannot get into the ballroom proper.
