The hypnotic and surreal imagery of British artist Storm Thorgerson will be spotlighted at San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAE) via "Wide Asleep," an unprecedented exhibition of his vivid and visionary work. Known for indelible images conceived for some of the most legendary albums of the rock 'n roll era - including recordings by Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel and other superstars - Thorgerson has said, "Art is about flights of the imagination." With its major impact on contemporary culture, Thorgerson's album art has indeed captured the imagination of millions, making SFAE - widely renowned as the "Gallery Of The Popular Image" - the ideal venue for the largest, most varied showing of his work ever assembled. The London-based Thorgerson will journey Stateside for an artist's reception at SFAE marking the show's official opening on Sat. November 18, 7PM. The exhibit runs through the end of '06.

"Storm Thorgerson was one of the first artists to take album imagery to a whole new level," says SFAE co-founder/CEO Theron Kabrich. "Not only do his pieces invoke sensory visual experiences that are deeply interconnected to the music, they exist as highly evolved works on their own. The power of his vision is largely responsible for album art becoming seriously collectible."

The palpable dream state conjured up by Thorgerson's imagery - which has been compared in its effect to "modern day Dali, Magritte and Man Ray all wrapped into one" - will powerfully transform SFAE's space with Wide Asleep, which features upwards of sixty distinct works. Among the highlights are original drawings - including ultra-rare, previously unexhibited artworks created for Pink Floyd's masterpiece Dark Side Of The Moon - and limited editions of signature images including the blonde-haired and bare children ascending rock steps on the cover of Led Zeppelin's Houses Of The Holy. Images range from the spectacularly iconic to the tantalizingly obscure.
