Water, Light and Community in the Philippines

Engineers Shen Maglinte and Nazario Cacayan are in the US at the invitation of the World Bank's Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP), and will be in Portland on their way back home after a GVEP event in Washington DC where they were invited to share their experiences with peers from around the world.

The Speakers

Shen Maglinte is deputy director of SIBAT, a larger NGO located near Manila with more than 20 years of experience all over the Philippines in micro-hydro, sustainable agriculture, solar pumping and electrification, and lately wind energy turbines. Shen is an outspoken advocate of biological safety with regards to the prohibition of genetically modified organisms (GMO's). Shen and SIBAT seek to promote and popularize the application of sustainable agriculture and appropriate technology for rural development.

Nazario Cacayan ("Nonoy" for short), an agricultural engineer, a micro-hydro expert, and the Executive Director for YAMOG. Nonoy has worked with Green Empowerment for many years and is energetic about their joint successes in the region. He is actively involved in the network of environmental groups in the area and is at the forefront of environmental training and developing rural energy systems. In addition to several micro hydro, they have recently installed a solar pumping system in a village of 600 in Mindanao.
