2012 Winter Walk Raises Funds to End Homelessness
Sunday, Dec. 2

BOSTON| On a typical winter day in New England, someone who is homeless spends his or her day facing sleet, snow and whipping wind in search of warmth. Homelessness is a growing problem in Massachusetts that affects more than 16,000 residents, including 6,000 Bostonians.

Hearth and HomeStart, two leading nonprofit organizations in Greater Boston that work to end homelessness and provide permanent and affordable housing, are coming together to raise awareness and funds through the Winter Walk. The Winter Walk is set to take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Boston Common. The event symbolizes the hardship and difficulties the homeless population experience every day as they walk the winter streets looking for shelter.

The Winter Walk hopes to attract 500 participants to the Boston Common to complete a two-mile route and raise $200,000 to provide housing and create solutions to help those who currently call the city’s streets and alleyways home. On average, it costs $1,285 for a case manger to help someone move from the streets into permanent housing.

The suggested fundraising minimum per walker is $100 and teams are welcome. For questions, more information, or to register to participate in the 2012 Winter Walk, visit winterwalk.org.
