According to Rianne Mitchell, one of the Walks' organizers, “Social
change never has been won by relying on the good will of politicians.
The victories of the civil rights and anti-war movements of the last
century were won by groups of committed individuals coming to
understand that not only are we ultimately fighting for the same goal,
but that it’s only by working together that we can achieve it. There
are all kinds of local grassroots struggles going on here to stop the
persecution of immigrants, to fight racism, to protect the rights of
our children, and to get the resources that our struggling
neighborhoods and schools deserve. These walks are an effort to connect
current and future activists taking on the issues that most concern our
communities....”

Rochester Walks for Peace includes local anti-war activists from groups
like Rochester Against War (RAW), Declaration of Peace, Military
Families Speak Out, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) and others who
have come together to link up – across neighborhoods and across issues
– with other local activists and ordinary people working for real
change from the bottom up.
